Nathan Odai is a breach in Verugal Aru, Which is the spill tail canal of the Mavilaru anicut. Left bank was breached in year 2011 flood. After that a bund was constructed to prevent the flood and it also breached due to overtopping. Some of the Minor Tank also effected due to the Nathan Odai breach and most of the People and paddy land effected in Verugal Divisional Secretary Area.

Proceeded about 3.5KM from Divisional Secretariat, Verugal to Mawadichenai School towards Batticaloa. Then turn right and proceed about 1.6 KM to reach Nathan Odai.

Farmers and villages from Verugal Divisional Secretariat area effected by flood in rainy season. About 3000 families and 2500 acres of paddy land effected from Verugal, Anaitheevu, Verugalmugathuwaram, Eachchilampattu, Elangaithurai, Karukamunai, Elangaithurai Mugathuwaram and Poomarathadichenai GN Division. Due to over topping of Batticaloa – Trincomalee highway from Verugal Bridge to Poonagar, people from Verugal Divisional Secretary area isolated. Lankapatuna Road also overtop during flood. Most of the farmers cultivate only for Maha season due to scarcity of water in Yala season. Therefore this breach effect the cultivation and farmers lost their income even in Maha.

Human – Elephant Conflict is one of the environmental and Socio – Economic Crises of   Verugal Divisional Secretariat Division. Annually elephants Causes Several Acre of Crop and Property damage and in retaliation the farmers kill the elephants.

Causes of Conflict are reducing forest area   due to development works, The rape of forest, villages encroaching in to forest, Grasslands being used by farmers’ Cattle and the low forest quality. After 2013, 06 Persons death 05 person injured   in Verugal Division. 100’s of houses and Cultivation damaged by the aboved problem. 42.16 Km Elephant fence have to Construct in this division. Out of 42.16, Elangaithurai 3.43Km, Karukkamunai 5.47Km, Poonagar 20.93Km, Poomarathadichenai 9Km. elephant fence one estimated.

This is a main channel situated in south of the AES in Eachchilampattu village and fallen to lagoon at Elangaithuraimugaththuwaram. The Channel over grown with light jungle and the bed covered with silt.

This channel not been cleared since the innovation of AES. The rain water of branch channel No.3 off RB main channel area and the surrounding are fallen in this channel which are in LB side of it. Also, rain feed cultivation of paddy and other crops being done in RB side. The both banks of the channel inundate the normal rainy season that in North – East monsoon.

The flood water (part) flow through the breach of the LB bank of Verugal river which is called Nathan odai  also flow through this channel .Since this not been cleared for long period the surrounding area get inundated and crops got damaged.

The damages caused to LB side about 1000 hectare and in RB side about 800 hectares. Request made in several times by the cultivators as well as DS Verugal to clear this channel.
